How to:

Stage 1:

  1. Spread the work surface with lots of newspaper.

  2. Lay your banner sized sheet of paper over this.

  1. Draw out your design using the marker pens.

Stage 2:

  1. Lay the silk over this and fix it to the paper with masking tape. The drawing will show through the transparency of the silk.

  2. Brush melted wax (I use left over candle ends), over the top of your drawn lines, making sure that it's both thick and 'runny' enough to dispel the paint.

Stage 3:

  1. If you want, crack some of the wax by crinkling the fabric, but do not separate from the paper.

  2. Colour- in using all paints watered down.

  3. Colours should overlap and bleed into adjacent areas.

Stage 4:

  1. Lay clean, preferably white paper over the banner and start to iron this.

  2. The heat of the iron will transfer the wax to the paper, fix the paint and leave the silk soft and flexible.

  3. Remove the backing paper.

Finishing

  1. You may work detail into your banner by adding sequins, buttons, glitter glue, fabric pen or crayon, embroidery silks....

  2. If the banner is to be hung vertically, add a bamboo pole to the top using double sided tape or glue leaving both ends of the pole exposed

  3. Tie ribbon around each end to create a hanging cord.

  4. Add weight to help the banner hang well by putting tassels on, adding another pole, hemming and incluing curtain weights....
